Step 2 - You can use Knoppix to rescue your data to external storage, Knoppix is a Linux OS that you can run from CD/DVD/USB without having to boot to your hard drive. If it boots to Knoppix you likely don't have a hardware problem. You can then rescue your data to a USB storage device fairly easily. This entire video is shot using a real computer with a problem that is about 7 years old but, I just used Knoppix on a brand new Dell with an I7 processor and it also did a perfect job of having adequate driver support to get the data off to a USB device just as easy.

1) You need a blank CD or DVD to download Knoppix and burn it on to. (I used the DVD version in the video)
2) You need a USB storage device with room on it to store your rescued stuff (Note: You should have non-important content on the USB storage device since their is a slim chance you might wipe it out)

Knoppix has great driver support and is free unlike a Windows based live boot CD/DVD which is a licensed OS that you would need to cook up to be Windows XP BartPE or Win7PE with compatible drivers.

Knoppix has many more things it could benefit you with. This video only covers using it to rescue your data.

My next video will cover removing the hard drive and directly rescuing your data or scanning it for viruses from another windows computer using cost effective hardware to read it. We'll call that step 3.
